Purpose:
To develop laser retina surgery by simulation and calculating the laser intensity of beam spot on the retina diabetic retinopathy patients using computer model and clinical OCT data.
Methods:
First step was modeling a simple model of the eye with its optical components, including the cornea, pupil, lens, vitreous, retina, choroid, sclera and aqueous humor using Zemax software. Then, to simulate laser beam spot on the retina, laser beams in size of 1 mm with different wavelengths were illuminated in the eye model. Different wavelengths (green 532 nm and red 670 nm) have different scattering rates and focal point so we got different spot size on the retina. On the next step we calculate laser spot size from clinical OCT images from diabetic patients after undergoing laser surgery.
Results:
The sizes of laser spots on the retina in the eye model were calculated. They were in agreement with the sizes given by the surgeon in range 200 micro-meter. The result is in agreement with the theoretical predications based on wavelength and spot size relation. However, the spots sizes on retina measured from OCT images are twice of what was adjusted by ophthalmologist.
Conclusion:
We aimed to simulate an eye model with the laser surgery parameters including intensity, focal spot sizes and wavelengths that use in ophthalmology surgery. This may provide required information for eye specialists before the retina surgery. This helps ophthalmologists and improves the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
