Purpose:
To evaluate Normal Macular Thickness measurement by age and gender in healthy eye using Cirrus HD-OCT in RASHT city
Methods:
In this cross-sectional survey, 112 random samples were selected from Rasht telephone book list by systematic random selection. All subjects underwent complete eye examinations All OCT scans were performed by a single operator and both eyes of each patient were evaluated. Optional protocol was macular thickness MAP with macular cub 512×128 and the average thickness of the retina was determined in 9 ETDRS regions method.
Results:
The coefficient of variation of macular thickness within 1mm of center was 0.15-1.33%with this power of system reproductibility, the mean ±SD of CST, MT, MV were 245.44±20.39 micrometer, 277.9±11.95 micrometer and 9.98±0.43mm3 respectively. The mean CST (p<0.0001) and MV (p<0.030) and MT (p<0.038) in men were more than women. The thickness of MT, MV, CST decreases wih age. So that for every 10-year increase in age, 0.23 micrometer of macular thickness decreases, so this reduction is not clinically meaningful. Also regardless of age and gender, macular thickness is increased from 1mm of center to 3mm and 6mm of ETDRS-regions so that the upper three millimeters (S3) is the thickest and T6 is the thinnest. Also the average macular thickness showed no significant difference between the two eyes
Conclusion:
The mean macular thickness in healthy subjects with cirrus-HD OCT 280.67±12.79μm in men and this is 276.95-284.38 μm with 95% confidence interval. The mean macular thickness in women is 276.63±11.61 μm and this is 274.90-278.136 μm with CI 95%. This value in men is significantly more than women (p<0.038). Also macular thickness decreases with age. But this reduction is not statistically meaningful.
