Purpose:

To assess the effect of phenylephrine test in eyelid position on ptotic and nonptotic eyes

Methods:

In fifty patients with asymmetric or unilateral ptosis marginal reflex distance 1 , 2 (MRD1 , MRD2), levator function ,and palpebral height were measured then after 8 minutes of instillation of phenylephrine 5% eye drop in both eyes all above variations were rechecked.

Results:

The mean MRD1 increased by 0.68± 0.72 in normal or less ptotic eyes and by 1.24 ±0.4 in ptotic or more ptotic eyes. No statistically significant change was seen in MRD2 or levator function following the test. In 4 patients increase in MRD1 was greater in normal or less ptotic eyes and in one patient MRD1 was decreased after phenylephrine test.

Conclusion:

Increase in MRD 1 in ptotic eye was more than the contralateral eye, so in unilateral ptosis surgery 1-2 mm overcorrection compare to intact eye is logical, furthermore for better surgical results, performing phenylephrine test and recording the eyelid parameters in both eyes before surgery may help better surgical planning and outcomes.
