Purpose:
Determination effect of intravitreal propranolol in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
Methods:
Forty two C57BL/6J mice were selected for this study. For the assessment of the efficacy of intravitreal propranolol on CNV, bruch’s membrane of mice was ruptured by laser burns for inducing CNV. Then mice were randomly received safe dose (0.3µg) of intravitreal propranolol or intravitreal normal saline. Neovascularization was measured on choroidal-scleral flat mounts using intercellular adhesion molecule 2 immunofluorescence staining.
Results:
Mice eyes treated with intravitreal injection of propranolol showed significantly smaller neovascular choroidal outgrowths compared to the control. An approximately 4.8-fold decrease in the average CNV area in each eye was observed in the propranolol-treated (mean [SE], 17945 [25971] µm2; n=21 eyes) compared with the control (mean [SE], 86821 [49274] µm2; n=17 eyes), which was statistically significant (p<0.001.
Conclusion:
Intravitreal propranolol had an inhibitory effect on the growth of laser-induced CNV in the murine eyes. Further studies are required to confirm whether intravitreal propranolol can be a proper treatment for ocular neovascular disorders.
