Purpose:

To determine ocular parameters affecting the direction of ocular deviation in patients with sensory strabismus

Methods:

In this prospective study, patients with sensory strabismus were enrolled and ocular factors including etiology of visual loss, refraction and axial length of both deviated and fellow normal eyes were determined and analysed

Results:

177 patients were enrolled in the study of them 57 patients were esotropic and 120 patients were exotropic. Patients with a congenital etiology were more commonly esotropic while exotropic patients more prevalently suffered from an acquired etiology (p= 0.001). In addition patients with myopia in normal eyes were more commonly exotropic (p=0.01) and more longer axial lenghs(p = 0.02) of normal eye whereas esotropic subjects more probably had a hypermetropic and shorter axial lenghs of normal eye

Conclusion:

It seems that sensory esodeviation is related with a congenital visual loss as well as hyperopia and shorter axial lenghs in normal fellow eye. The reverse is true for sensory exodeviation.
