Purpose:

Sensory deficit is a prevalent cause of strabismus which is observed in ophthalmology clinics of various subspecialties. The aim of this study is to investigate about demographic features, etiologies and results of treatment in a referral eye center

Methods:

The patients whose eye squint had been documented to be attributable to a visual loss were included in this retrospective study and information about age of vision loss and age of deviation onset, sex, etiology of visual loss, type of deviation, and surgical results was collected and analysed.

Results:

177 patients were enrolled in the study with a mean age of 24.4 ± 11.4 and range of 1 to 71 years. 62.2 % of patients were male. About 67.8 % of subjects were exotrpoic and others were esotropic. Ocular trauma, congenital cataract and anisometropic amblyopia were among most common predisposing factors. At the end of sixths month following surgery, 67 % of patients were within 10 PD of deviation at primary position. Under correction was more common in exotroic patients with lower visual acuities.

Conclusion:

Sensory strabismus is more prevalently observed in young and male patients. Ocular trauma is a main risk factor and patients with better visual acuities enjoy better surgical outcomes.
